What?
From LA Food Waste Grant Challenge:
  • Project Description: ECMS currently does not have a compost site due to a large campus revitalization project. The project will create a large area on campus for the cultivation of vegetables, herbs, fruits, and native plants. ECMS will close the food waste loop through infrastructure improvements, curriculum support, and student-led community education. ECMS will install a large 3-bin composter, place compost collection bins in classrooms, staff lounges, and after-school program areas. Students will serve as peer mentors to facilitate proper waste sorting through the “trash bouncer” program. Students will create upcycled compost collection bins for their homes and offer educational compost workshops to the surrounding community. 
Additional notes about project: 
  • The school has strong sustainable focus, but food waste remains a teachable opportunity.
